magic chromacity

Birmingham, Alabama (2014) - AEIVA and Alys Stephens Center buildings on the UAB campus.

Magic Chromacity (2014) was a large-scale fabric piece that was draped over the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts building and Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham, AL on the campus of University of Alabama, Birmingham. It was sponsored by the Art and Art History Department and Performing Arts Department of UAB. This site-specific piece was created, sewn, donated and installed by the people of Birmingham, Alabama. The name of the project references the nickname "Magic City" and the metal that was forged at the Sloss Furnaces (Chrome + City).

public sewing days

Public Sewing Days were held at a variety of location around Birmingham, AL.

Thanks to the Art and Art History and Performing Arts Departments of University of Alabama at Birmingham, we were able to connect students with community members around the stitching and installation of this project.

Bib & Tucker Sew-Op

I was lucky to have been able to work with the amazing sewists at the Bib & Tucker Sew-Op in Birmingham. I learned so much about sewing circles, quilts (yes! I do not know how to make a quilt!) and more! Working together we created a celebratory piece for the city and the people that live in Birmingham. I am forever grateful.

MISSION : Our mission is to cultivate skills and community for those who sew or want to sew, where everyone can be both a teacher and a student. One dream of the Sew-Op is to facilitate a sewing-based cottage industry that provides income and flexible working conditions for sewists. - PLEASE DONATE to their non-for-profit!
